The Yellowstone River has dropped and cleared. There was just a hint of color at Carter’s Bridge this morning. Ideal conditions for fishing this weekend. The water temperatures are down from last week, but there still are some caddis coming off. We had a very good report from yesterday of fish eating caddis (and caddis imitations) in the foam. As the water temps rise, the caddis action should only improve. You might also see baetis, March Browns, and/or midges out there. With the warm weather predicted for next week, this could be the last weekend for dry fly fishing before the river gets high and muddy again. You should fish!
My favorite flies for the Mother’s Day Caddis are Bloom’s Parachute Caddis in dark olive, Everything Emerger peacock, Snowshoe Caddis in olive, and X2 Caddis in olive, all size 14.
If you’re not finding fish feeding on top, the nymph and streamer bites continue to be good. Try killing 2 birds with one stone and dead-drift a Zirdle (kind of a cross between a Rubberlegs and a Zonker). Or you could strip a Sparkle Minnow (peacock or black if it’s cloudy, white or smoke if the sun’s shining). As far as nymphs go, we’re still having good luck with Rubberlegs, red Copper Johns, Morrish Anato-May Peacocks, Super Pupas in olive….
Runoff is on its way. Don’t miss this window of opportunity!
