I waded the Yellowstone River up in Yankee Jim Canyon for a couple of hours last night. There were still a few salmonflies in the willows and the air. Enough to keep the trout interested in salmonfly dries. I caught nice fish on a Flutterbug and a Cat Puke. If you (or your buddy) are an expert on the oars and have a raft, give the canyon a float. You won’t see as many anglers as on the nearby floats, and the fishing is good. Above the canyon should also be good right now, and you still might get some salmonfly action just below the canyon as well (e.g., Carbella to Emigrant). I did see one goldenstone; a golden Chubby Chernobyl, Dog Puke, Bullet Head Golden Stone, Designated Hitter Golden, or Golden Flutter Bug is worth throwing as these trouts’ favorites start to appear. Drop a tan/brown Rubberlegs, golden Rock ‘n Roller Stone, or other goldenstone nymph imitation off of your dry fly and prepare to start catching fish. Don’t forget about all of the caddis and yellow sallies that are out right now. We’ve got tons of juicy patterns to imitate these bugs, both nymphs and dries. Stop in Sweetwater Fly Shop on your way to the river and we’ll get you set up for your outing. About the only error you can make right now is staying at home.
