We’ve been giving away a bunch of FREE Rude Trude dry flies here at Sweetwater Fly Shop! Have you picked up a few (or a few dozen) yet? Have you fished them? Have you caught fish on them? If you answered “no” to those questions, it’s high time to get with the program! You only have until September 15 to catch a fish on the Rude Trude, photograph it, and enter the picture in our “Rudie Can’t Fail” photo contest. You could win yourself fame, glory, and even a super-sweet grand prize! Don’t delay any longer.
I’m not saying that catching a nice fish on the Rude Trude will be an easy task. Not at all. But what’s the fun of life (and fly fishing) without some difficult challenges? After all, anglers come to the Livingston, Montana area from all over the world to match their fly fishing skills against the wily trout of the Paradise Valley spring creeks. Myself, I’ve been fishing hard with both the royal and lime Rude Trudes for a couple of weeks, with only limited success. Just a rather diminutive cutthroat trout and a few whitefish. Until yesterday, that is.
After I closed the shop last night, I wandered back to the Yellowstone River to make a few casts before darkness set in. Just as I was thinking of giving it up and heading home, a fish hammered my Rude Trude right as my cast hit the water. It turned out to be the beautiful 18″ rainbow trout in the video below. Check it out, why don’t you?
Which version of Rude Trude did the trout eat, the royal or the lime? Neither. I was rummaging around the box of Rudies and found a single dozen of a previously undiscovered pheasant tail version (and a dozen hare’s ear Rudies, as well). Who knew? It turns out that the pink-posted wonder fly was tied in a whole bunch of varieties. We’ll never know why. Now I’ve got the two new flavors behind the counter here at Sweetwater Fly Shop. Beg hard enough and maybe I’ll grace you with one or two.
Not sure (or not old enough to know) where we got the name for the photo contest? Well, here’s your answer below.
For good measure, here’s a great live cover of the classic Clash song by the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. And it even has Spanish subtitles, in case you’re bilingual.
Take the Rude Trude challenge! Just do it!
