Yes, this weekend is going to be a scorcher! But wouldn’t you rather be out on the water than mowing your yard? Water temperatures still are relatively cool and the fish are still eating. Topwater action has been good. There are goldenstones starting to appear and plenty of caddis and little yellow sally stoneflies out and about. If I were headed out today, I’d start with a double dry rig. My point fly would be something big (say, size 8) like a gold Chubby Chernobyl, Flutter Bug Golden, Bullet Head Goldenstone, Dog Puke, Designated Hitter, or Totally Stoned Golden. Tie about 2 feet of tippet off of the bend of the hook, then tie in a second, smaller dry. I’d drop off an Elk Hair Caddis or similar caddis dry, or a Hairy Yellow Sally, Yellow Sally Rollin’ Stone, or Snowshoe Yellow Sally. If you want to go with a nymph for your dropper, there are tons of options. You could go with a tan/brown Rubberlegs to imitate the goldenstone nymph. Or drop something smaller, like a CDC Pheasant Tail, Soft Hackle Copper John, Kyle’s Beadhead Yellow Sally, Tungsten Yellow Sally, etc…. Bring your sunscreen and stay hydrated!
